  • Four Sign National-Letters-of-Intent with Wichita State Men’s Basketball

    Most of this was already known, but now it's official:

    WICHITA, Kan. – Fifth-year head coach Gregg Marshall has announced the signing of Derail Green, Cleanthony Early, Fred Van Vleet and Henry Uwadiae to National Letters-of-Intent to play men’s basketball at Wichita State beginning with the 2012-13 season.

    “We are very pleased to announce we have four NLI’s and grant-in-aids back from our four verbal commitments,” Marshall said.

    Cleanthony Early, a 6-foot-8, 220 pound forward from Sullivan (N.Y) Community College, was the NJCAA Division III Player of the Year in 2011. He will have two seasons of eligibility at WSU.

    “Cleanthony Early at 6-foot-8 is the most complete offensive player I have recruited in my tenure at Wichita State,” Marshall said. “He can score the ball any way you’d like him to, in transition, off the glass, in the post, on the perimeter and by putting it on the deck. While continuing to refine his game under the tutelage of Coach Kevin DeVantier at Sullivan Community College, I think Cleanthony is in store for a great year. Cleanthony is one of the most highly touted junior college players in the country.”

    Green, a 6-7, 190 pound forward from Houston Klein Forest, averaged 12.9 points and 6.3 rebounds a year ago as a junior.

    “Derail is a 6-7 combo forward who has remarkable skills shooting and handling the ball,” Marshall said. “As he continues to develop his strength, he will be even more trouble for defenses. Klein Forest is the same high school as Toure Murry attended. Derail will also come ready to play after being in Coach Carey Black’s program.”

    Van Vleet, a 5-11, 175-pound guard from Rockford (Ill.) Auburn, is ranked the No. 26 point guard in the class of 2012 by Scout.com. He averaged 18.6 points and 7.5 assists as a junior.

    “Fred is a coach’s dream as a point guard both on the floor and off,” Marshall said. “He is a young man who is precocious and because of that he plays beyond his years in terms of decision-making and toughness. His AAU team, the Primetime Ballers in Rockford, Ill., had an outstanding summer with a 54-8 record for coach Anthony “Doc” Cornell. His high school team, Rockford Auburn, was successful a year ago and is expected to have a tremendous season with Fred running the show and Coach Bryan Ott calling the shots.”

    Henry Uwadiae (unn-waa-DEE-A), a 6-10, 210-pound center from Benin City, Nigeria by way of Evelyn Mack Academy of Charlotte, N.C., rounds out the signees.

    “Henry is a 6-10 center who, according to his coach Tyson Waterman is improving every day. He is playing above the rim and working on his post moves and beginning to become the defensive menace that he will bring with him to our team next season. He can really run and should develop into an outstanding post player in the future,” Marshall said.

    “My staff did a wonderful job of putting together this dynamic class,” Marshall said. “We got our first choice in several of these young men.”

    And Henry loses 2 inches just like that. Still, I did beg for a 6-10 jumping jack for years and I think he fits the bill. Whether or not he and Derail fully develop remains to be seen, but they are both rather uniquely qualified ballers, HU for his size/athleticism and DG for his size/skills. On top of that, they aren't even the second best recruit.

      Next time beg for a 7-foot jumping jack, okay?

        Three freshmen and one juco. Nice balance. It looks like the staff did a great job getting these guys all in one class.

            It's a GREAT day to be a shocker! The 2012-2013 recruiting class is my favorite of the Gregg Marshall era by far. The class is rounded out to say the least. Four players that don't bleed into each others respective roles, ie:

            Fred = 1

            Cleanthony = 3/4

            Derail = 2

            Henry = 5

            On top of that, 3 are freshmen and will lead the shockers for years to come!!

            I thought 2011-2012 was pretty amazing with Marshall filling in the cracks of our team's foundation. With our latest class however, he's starting a new foundation for our success to build upon.

              Ummm.... Derail is a 3/4. If anyone might be a 2 it's Early. However, Early is a Juco and Green a true freshman (who might red shirt).

                I was going to also post that Derail is a 3/4, but it should be noted that he and Cleanthony do have some quickness and guard skills that could translate to SG or some type of transition point forward position. Either way, I think that if they are going to be highly successful they will play inside out (forward) in a 4 out 1 in style of offense. 6-8 is absolutely huge for a Valley SF.

                  We may as well start speculating on the RS's already. With possibly 3 RS candidates this year and 3 true FR next year that would be as many as 6 Fr, and I don't think Marshall is going to have that type of class imbalance.

                  I'm starting to get the feeling that as long as Marshall is here, we will have a supply of 5th year Seniors on the team.
                  The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
                  We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

                      I remember up until he arrived, it seemed like most people on this website figured Cotton would redshirt. The year before we all thought Manigault was gonna be our PG, possibly from day 1 when he got here. It's so tough to be able to guess who will succeed and who won't, let alone pick out redshirts.

                        Derail is 40lb less than Early, and Derail is the 4? He has a body similar to Toure, just more height. Everything I'm seen of Derail keeps him on the perimeter, and Early has the body/skill set to drive and get fouls. Maybe when Marshall first got here Derail would play the 4, but Marshall is recruiting bigger men for the big positions nowadays. At 6'-7" 180lb, Mr. Green doesn't fit in to Marshall's matured roster at the 4. A three at most.

                          Green is a combo forward. I believe the press release even stated that. Early is a SG/SF who can take people inside. Weight isn't everything but it's probably why Green will redshirt. That and Hall, Anacreon, White, Early and Wessel

                            Derail is being brought in because of his combination of guard skills in the body of a mid-major PF. If he adds some weight/nastiness, he has the potential to be a very good PF. If he adds some quickness, he might be useful as a SG. Most likely, he will be a good Valley SF by the time he is an upperclassmen with huge potential to become a big time player at three positions. We'll have to see where his work ethic, athleticism, body, skills lead him.

                              I am a fan of Derail. He is going to be a mismatch nightmare in the Valley once we bulk him up
